***NOTE: Do not use one a personal laptop. This is for UW-Green Bay laptops only.***
***NOTE: UW-Green Bay laptops running Windows 10 will have VPN enabled. When VPN is installed, there are no local accounts that can be utilized - users must login with campus credentials. When on campus and not on a wired connection, the computer will automatically connect to the UW-Green Bay domain when logged in with a faculty/staff account.***
***NOTE: Each user for a laptop must log on to the network while still on campus with either wired or wireless connection. Failure to do this will result in not being able to log onto the laptop when you are off campus.***
Establishing Your Account on the Laptop
***NOTE: Each user must do this.***
1. Turn on the laptop, and select "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" to get to the log in screen.
2. Enter your current UWGB username and password.
Setup Network Printers (this step is optional)
***NOTE: You must do this on campus if you want to use printers off campus.***
1. In your folders, search "\\fpsd."
2. Find your printer, right-click and select "Connect."
WiFi Connection
1. After logging in, ensure that you have a WiFi connection; if not, connect to one.
***NOTE: If you are using a network WiFi with a log-in page (hotel, resort), see the section on Captive Portals.***
***NOTE: If no WiFi is available, all data saved to this laptop will be saved locally and should be backed up.***
2. Look in the System Tray to verify your WiFi connection status:
You're connected to WiFi and the Internet:
A wireless adapter is detected, networks in range, but you're not connected to one:
No WiFi networks found an dnot connected to WiFi. Check airplane mode:
Airplane mode is on and WiFi is turned off:
VPN Connection
1. After a new WiFi connection is established, you will see a window pop up that displays "Select a valid client certificate". Do the following:
1. Select the GB# of your laptop.
2. Select "OK."
2. On the following screen:
1. Sign in with your UW-Green Bay username and password.
2. Select "Connect."
3. Wait up to one minute, and then check that you're connected by looking at the following icon.
1. If the icon looks like the one above, you are connected to the UW-Green Bay network.
2. If the icon has a red X by it, then you are not connected.
3. If the icon is just a globe, then you are connected off campus.
***NOTE: Reconnecting to known WiFi networks will also automatically reconnect VPN.***
***NOTE: When you move from network to network (i.e. home to UWGB, home to hotel) you may need to re-establish this VPN connection. Just select the VPN icon and then on the three lines in the corner.***
4. Then, select "Settings."
5. It will then ask you to sign back into the VPN and will be connected.
***NOTE: If you don’t see the VPN icon – Navigate to the Start Menu and enter “Global Protect.”***
***NOTE: You must ensure that you either Log Off or Shut Down the laptop before you bring it from one network/location to the next. If you do not, your VPN may not connect properly, and you may lose work.***
Accessing Share Drives
1. You can use your M: drive exactly like you do on campus. You can locate it using Windows Explorer and expanding “This PC."
2. If you don’t see your M:\ drive, navigate to "File Explorer." Select the icon in the Address bar and Enter the address for your m:\ drive: (for example: \\fpsa\s\smithj or \\fpsa\d\darwinj). Then drag the location on top of the Quick Access location to pin it.
***NOTE: Department shares can be added using the steps listed above in Step 2.***
Outlook
1. If this is your primary computer you will probably want to use full-featured Outlook.
***NOTE: Search for Outlook and step through the automated process.***
2. If this laptop is a secondary machine, the most reliable way to use Outlook is to use Outlook OWA.
Changing your password
***NOTE: After you change your campus password, the VPN connection is unaware of this password change. Therefore, you must first log into the laptop with your old password. Once you've logged in with your old password, follow these steps to clear out the old password and install the new one.***
1. Expand the action bar, select the VPN icon and select the three lines on the top right.
2. Select "Settings."
3. Select "Sign out."
4. Select "OK" and then log in using your UW-Green Bay username and new password.
VPN Updates
1. If you receive a pop-up displaying a message about a GlobalProtect Update, you must select "Yes." If you do not, you will likely experience issues using the laptop. The update will install itself in the background, and you should wait a minute or two for it to complete before you begin to use the laptop.
Captive Portals (hotels, conference centers, hospitals)
1. If you are connected to a network that has a captive portal, such as a hotel, you must first connect to their network by connecting to it as you normally would with WiFi.
2. Once you are connected, you must then navigate to an internet browser if one hasn't been opened for you.
3. You then need to log into the web browser window; after you have done this, your VPN will be able to connect. Here's an example of a captive portal page in a browser window:
Installing Programs
1. You can install most programs used at UW-Green Bay by searching "Software Center” in the bottom right hand corner of your screen.
***NOTE: If the program you need is not in Software Center you will need to call the GBIT Service Desk at (920) 465-2309 or email them at gbit@uwgb.edu. ***
Updating Mac Passwords Off-Campus
Passwords should only be changed on a UW-Green Bay MacBook that is connected to VPN.
If you need VPN installed on a UW-Green Bay MacBook, please contact the GBIT Service Desk at (920) 465-2309 or at gbit@uwgb.edu.
1. Ensure your MacBook is connect to VPN.
2. Once the password changes, you will be disconnected from the UWGB Domain.
3. A VPN pop-up will appear, asking for your UWGB credentials. Sign in using the updated password.
