Connection information for guests staying in residence halls

Summary

This document details the internet services provided to guests staying on campus

Body

Throughout the year, mainly in summer, Residence Life houses guests in the residence halls.  These guests are sometimes here for summer camps, sports camps, internships for private companies, or sometimes retirees who spend summers in Wisconsin - normally referred to as snowbirds.  As many of these guests are bringing internet-capable devices with them, the issue of service is often brought up.

The following message is distributed by Housing to all guests outlining what services they are allowed / not allowed to use during their time on campus:

During your time in our housing area, you have several methods to access the Internet via our campus network.  Your two choices are to connect via the UWGB Guest wireless network or using wired data jacks in each room.  General information about accessing the networks is available on our ResNet web site at: https://www.uwgb.edu/housing/services-amenities/technology/

IoT Connection

For Smart TVs, snowbirds will need to be connected to the Internet of Things (IoT) network. To do this, complete the following:

1. From the snowbird, get from them their name and phone number, the make and model of the device they want to connect, the device's MAC address) and the room number and residence hall they're currently residing in.

2. Create a ticket in Ivanti with this information.

3. Forward this ticket to INF.

Spectrum U Connection

***NOTE: Spectrum U runs on computers, phones, Roku, and AppleTV only.***

Snowbirds will need to contact Adam Neveau in Res Life in order to get the login information for the Spectrum U application. They can reach him at (920) 465-2111.

For information regarding Spectrum U and it's setup, please refer to the Spectrum U web page on the UWGB website.

A few main points that you should be aware of:

1. Personally owned wireless routers and wireless printers are not permitted.  These devices generate interference that will disrupt the wireless network for other users.

2. Gaming consoles should be connected via the wired data jacks in your residence.

3. You must not tamper with or unplug any University owned wireless network equipment that may be installed in your residence.

4. You will be required to adhere to the Acceptable Use Policy for Guests which is available at the following web site: Staff, Students and Campus Guests: Acceptable Use Policy for Technology Resources

5. UW-Green Bay is required by federal law to investigate notices of improper file sharing and copyright infringement.  If a notice of copyright infringement is tracked to your residence, you will be notified, and if not resolved promptly, will result in loss of network access privileges.

If you are having difficulty accessing the network, please contact the campus GBIT Service Desk at 920-465-2309 for assistance.  The GBIT Service Desk is open Monday through Friday, from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

NOTE: We are not offering any assistance other than connecting users to UWGB Guest or the wired connections.  We are not providing guest accounts to access wireless!  If they require assistance with computer related issues, they will need to be referred to an outside vendor.
