Mac - Unicode Hex Input

Summary

This document details how to enable Unicode Hex Input on a Mac.

Body

Many faculty who teach in math and sciences need to insert special symbols that are not part of the normal character palette. These symbols are called Unicode symbols and often the user knows the Unicode code (a combination of numbers and letters). In order to insert these numbers, Unicode needs to be enabled on the computer following these directions:

  1. Navigate to Apple Menu -> System Settings -> Keyboard.
  2. Under Text Input section, click the Edit button to the right of Input Sources
  3. In the All Input Sources window, click the + in the lower left.
  4. Use the search bar to find Unicode Hex Input.  Click the Add button.
  5. Click Done in the All Input Sources window.
  6. Exit out of System Settings.
  7. In the upper right corner of the screen you will now see a keyboard key icon with a letter in (example is A for US input).  Click it and select "Unicode Hex Input."

You can now insert Unicode characters by holding in option + the Unicode code.  Check out a list of Unicode Hex Inputs at Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Unicode_characters
