Canvas - Resolving Zoom Error "User does not exist"

Summary

This document details the procedure for resolving the error: "User does not exist." This can occur after clicking on the "Zoom" link in a UWGB Canvas course.

Body

The Error

After launching the Zoom link in a Canvas course navigation menu, users may encounter a "Warning: User does not exist: youremail@uwgb.edu" message. This message may appear for one of two reasons:

  1. The user has changed their Canvas account's default email address to something other than their uwgb.edu email address.

The user registered for a personal Zoom account using their UWGB email address prior to the implementation of the UW System Zoom service in August 2021

Resolving the Error

Users who changed their default email address in Canvas to something other than their uwgb.edu email address will need to edit their account settings to re-select their uwgb.edu email address as their account's default. Please reference the following Canvas Basics guide page for instructions: How do I change my default email address in my user account?

Users who registered for a personal Zoom account with their UWGB email address will need to consolidate their Zoom user account into the Universities of Wisconsin Zoom account. This consolidation can be done by signing into the existing Zoom user account at https://zoom.us and then accepting the prompts to consolidate the account into the UW System account. For more information, please reference the Universities of Wisconsin System DLE KnowledgeBase article Zoom - Consolidating existing accounts to UW System.

Return to Canvas and select the Zoom link in your course. If prompted to allow the Zoom LTI to access your Canvas account, select "Authorize." The Zoom integration should now properly load.

***NOTE: Depending on server traffic, the account switch may process immediately or may take up to a few hours.***
