Summary

This article provides information on joining the Kahoot pilot program, using Kahoot, and getting support.

Body

UW-Green Bay is running a pilot program for Kahoot through the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning (CATL). With Kahoot, instructors can create and host live, game-based activities, such as quizzes and polls, to boost student engagement and reinforce learning. Kahoots can also be assigned as asynchronous activities. This article provides information on joining the pilot, using Kahoot, and getting support.

Joining the Kahoot Pilot

Instructors

Instructors who want to use Kahoot in one or more classes in the current term may request a Kahoot license by emailing the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning at catl@uwgb.edu . Prospective pilot participants will be sent a link to complete a short self-paced training before being issued their instructor license.

Students

Students do not need a license to participate in Kahoot activities. Instructors can share "Student Passes" with students if they would like to have students create their own Kahoots.

Signing in to Kahoot

Instructors

After receiving a license, instructors can sign into Kahoot by navigating to https://create.kahoot.it, entering their @uwgb.edu email address in the "Username or email" field and then selecting the Continue button to sign in via SSO (single sign-on).

Students

Students do not need to sign in to participate in Kahoot activities. If an instructor has shared a "Student Pass" with a student, that student can sign in at https://create.kahoot.it and use the "Continue with Microsoft" button to sign in with their UWGB credentials.

Where to Save your Kahoots?

With the UWGB license, you have access to two separate “workspaces” in Kahoot: a private workspace and a team workspace. You can only find Kahoots and reports within the workspace where you created them, so it is important to make sure you are in the desired workspace before starting to create a Kahoot or when you are trying to find an existing Kahoot or report.

When signed into Kahoot, you can switch between workspaces using the dropdown menu above the Home button in the left navigation menu. Please read this Kahoot guide on workspaces to learn the differences between these workspaces, how to switch between them, and how to move Kahoots from one workspace to another.

Considerations in the Private Workspace

Within the private workspace, it is most important to pay attention to the visibility setting of your Kahoots. Kahoots with the “Public” visibility setting can be found on Kahoot’s discover page by any Kahoot user (worldwide). If you don’t intend to share your creations with the public, make sure to update your Kahoot’s settings and select “Private” or “Unlisted” visibility before saving it.

Considerations in the Team Workspace

Within the UW-Green Bay team workspace, it is most important to pay attention to where you save your Kahoots.

  • Kahoots saved under “Your folders,” are private to you

  • Kahoots saved under “Organization’s folders” are shared with all other instructors at UWGB.

    • If you choose to share your Kahoots by saving them under “Organization’s folders” you can lock your Kahoot so that other users may use it but not make changes to it.

  • The visibility options in the team workspace are “Organization” and “Unlisted.” The difference is subtle:

    • Unlisted visibility lets you share a direct link to your Kahoot with creators outside of the UWGB team

    • Organization visibility limits collaboration to only users who are a member of the UWGB team workspace

If you launch the Kahoot creator from the team workspace’s home page, Kahoot will default to saving your creation under “Organization’s folders” unless you change its settings. Before saving it, please make sure to update your Kahoot’s settings and pay attention to the “Save to” location to make sure you do not unintentionally give access to all UWGB instructors.

Finding Unsaved Work in Drafts

If you forget to select the Save button before closing the Kahoot creator, you can find unsaved Kahoots in your Library under “Drafts.” A saved Kahoot will also end up in your drafts if it has an issue that would prevent it from being played (e.g., a quiz question with no correct answer selected).

Making Accessible Kahoots

As with all digital resources you create, it is important to follow accessibility best practices while creating Kahoots. Here are tips for making accessible Kahoots:

  • Add alternative text to images

  • While creating Kahoots, select longer time limits for your questions.

  • Turn on the "Show questions & answers" option for live games so that students can read question and answer text on their own devices

  • If assigning asynchronously, do not import slides from PowerPoint. Text on imported slides is not readable by assistive technologies. Instead, build your slides in Kahoot.

    • For live sessions, using imported slides can be OK. If you use imported slides, help students by reading the slide content, questions, and answer choices aloud. Provide students with an accessible PowerPoint file which contains those slides.

  • Students with low or no vision may not be able to complete Pin Answer or Drop Pin questions.

  • Students with low or no vision can participate in “collect opinion” question types (e.g., Poll, Word Cloud, etc.), but you will need to verbally summarize the results shown for these question types.

  • While rare, students in in-person classes may not have a smartphone or laptop with them for participating in Kahoot sessions. Be prepared to accommodate those students by allowing them to submit answers to you on paper.

Students

Students can join a Kahoot game by navigating to https://kahoot.it in a web browser and entering the game PIN shown on the host's screen. For more information, please explore the article How to join a Kahoot game on the  – Kahoot Help & Resource Center.

Getting Support

To find answers to your questions about Kahoot, navigate to this Kahoot support page where you can search the Kahoot KnowledgeBase, ask Kahoot’s chatbot “Robyn,” or open a ticket with Kahoot support.
