GBIT Guidelines for Travel to Restricted Countries
The UW-Green Bay Information Technology Division recommends the following guidelines to ensure the safety and security of faculty and staff traveling for university-related purposes to high-risk countries. GBIT recognizes the importance for international travel to advance the university’s mission, while also prioritizing the need to protect university employees, their privacy and university data.
Recommendations
- Frequently check the US Department of State for travel restrictions. https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/traveladvisories/traveladvisories.html/
- Do not take any personal or university-issued computers, cellphones or other electronics.
- Assume there is no expectation of privacy and all devices have been compromised
- Consider purchasing a temporary cell phone or sim card to replace your personal cellphone.
- Consider creating a temporary email account (e.g., Gmail) instead of using your UWGB or personal email.
Guidelines
- Reset all passwords before leaving and upon returning. Make sure all passwords are strong and secure.
- Verify your Virtual Private Network (VPN) is installed, configured and tested on all devices. *Note that personal devices will need a personal VPN service.
- Remove any sensitive or confidential data from your device. Take only the data/research you need.
- Notify your supervisor, staff, and co-workers concerning your travel plans and to not open any emails or attachments from you while out of the country.
- If you need to access GB resources, make sure your laptop wi-fi is secure and you are successfully connected to VPN.
- GBIT reserves the right to lock your UWGB account and block network traffic while you are out of the country.
Available Technology from GBIT
- A temporary laptop computer can be issued for faculty and staff.
- The computer will be re-imaged or e-wasted upon return.
- The computer will have no UWGB related software. (Outlook, Microsoft licensing, etc.)
- A minimal amount of software will be available for note-taking and other tasks.
- GBIT can assist with backing up your device, enabling device encryption, password resets and assisting with other concerns.
