Canvas - Getting Started with Canvas Portfolio

The Canvas Portfolio tool allows students to collect projects, reflect on their learning, and present a personal narrative about their academic and professional experience. The Portfolio tool supports two types of portfolios:

  • Showcase Portfolios - Students build showcase portfolios from scratch and can choose which projects, professional experiences, and extracurricular activities to highlight.
  • Evaluation Portfolios - Instructors build a structured portfolio template for students to fill in. Instructors can monitor student progress, view the student portfolios, leave feedback, and mark elements as complete or request revision.

How to Access the Portfolio Tool

IMPORTANT: Please make sure that the URL in your browser's address bar begins with "https://uwgby.instructure.com" whenever you access Canvas Portfolio. The Canvas Portfolio tool is sensitive to the URL you are using when accessing it. You may not be able to access your portfolios if the URL begins with https://uws.instructure.com or anything else but https://uwgby.instructure.com.

Open the Portfolio tool from Account in the Canvas Global Navigation Menu:

  1. Log in to Canvas with your UWGB username and password.
  2. In the Canvas Global Navigation Menu, select Account.
  3. In the Account menu, select Portfolio.

Building Showcase Portfolios

IMPORTANT: Evidence that you create with the "Add assignment from course" option cannot be viewed by others when you share your portfolio with a public link. Because it cannot be shared, we do not recommend that you use the "Add assignment from course" option when adding evidence to a showcase portfolio. If you want to add an assignment submission from one of your courses to a showcase portfolio, use the "Create new evidence" option and manually upload your submission as a file to the evidence attachments.

Instructions for creating and assigning evaluation portfolios can be found in the following official Canvas Instructor Guide pages:

IMPORTANT: Student submissions can only be reviewed by the instructor who created the evaluation portfolio. Co-teachers and TAs do not have access to review student portfolios.

Instructors may also create and share their own showcase portfolios by following the same steps as shown in the student guides.
