Canvas (Instructors) - New Quizzes - Build a Quiz with Random Items from a Bank

Instructors can follow these instructions to create a quiz that randomly selects a number of questions from an item bank.

Part 1: Create questions in an Item Bank

1. From your Canvas course, select Item Banks in the course navigation menu.
   

2. Select the + Bank button to create a new item bank.
   

   1. Enter a name in the Bank Name field.
   2. Check the "Share with [course name]" box. This makes it easier to find the bank while working in your course.
   3. Select the Create Bank button.
      

3. In this list of banks, select the name of your bank to open it. If needed, select This Course in the "Filter By" dropdown menu to show only banks that are shared with the current course.
   

4. Select the + New button to create a new item (question) in the bank. Select an item type, enter item details, then select the Done button to save the item.
   

5. Add more items to the bank by repeating step 4.

Part 2: Create a Quiz that pulls random items from the item bank

1. Create a new quiz in your Canvas course:

   1. Select the Quizzes link in the course navigation menu.
   2. Select the + Quiz/Survey button.
      
   3. If prompted to "Choose a Quiz Engine," choose New Quizzes/Surveys and select the Submit button.

2. Configure options for the quiz:

   1. Enter a name in the "Assignment Name" field.
   2. Enter a point value for the quiz in the "Points" field.
   3. Select the correct group in the "Assignment Group" field.
   4. Enter a due date and availability dates in the "Assign Access" box.
   5. Select the Build button to save these options and begin building the quiz.
      

3. Build the quiz using randomly selected questions from your item bank.

   1. Select the "Add Instructions..." area and type the instructions you would like students to see before starting the quiz. Select the Done button to save the instructions.

   2. Select the + icon (plus icon) underneath the instructions to open the Insert Content menu.
      

   3. Select the Item Banks icon in the top-right corner of the Insert Content menu.
      

   4. In the Item Banks panel that appears on the right side of the screen, select the name of the item bank you created in part 1.
      

   5. Select the + All / Random button. This adds a question group to the quiz which pulls all questions from the bank. The order of these questions will be randomized for each student.
      

   6. Close the Item Banks panel by selecting the "X" in the top-left corner of the panel.

   7. If desired, edit the question group so to have the quiz randomly pull a number of questions from the bank instead of all its questions:

      1. Select the edit button (pencil icon) on the question group to reveal its options.
         
      2. Under "Question selection", select Randomly select questions.
      3. Enter the number of questions you want to pull in the "Number of questions" box.
      4. Enter how many points you want each question to be worth in the "Points per question" box.
      5. Select the Done button to save the changes.
         

4. Select your desired settings in the quiz builder's Settings tab.

5. Select the Return button in the top-right corner of the quiz builder to exit the builder and return to your course.

6. Publish your quiz and add it to a course module.
