Kaltura - Using Video Player Controls

Use the following controls to adjust your video playback experience while watching a Kaltura (My Media) video. If you see a message referencing "3rd party session cookies" instead of a video player, please see Canvas - Enable Third-Party Cookies for Kaltura Videos and Other External Tools for troubleshooting.

Kaltura updated the video player in August 2024. Videos embedded on or after August 2024 use the newer "v7" player; videos embedded before August 2024 use the older "v2" player.

v7 Player Controls (current player)

v7 Player

  1. Play/Pause - Select this button to play or pause the video. The screenshot above shows the button in the "pause" state. The following screenshot shows the button in the "play" state:

  2. Seek 10 Seconds Backward - Select this button to go back 10 seconds.
  3. Seek 10 Seconds Forward - Select this button to skip ahead 10 seconds.
  4. Time Elapsed / Total Time - Displays your current position in the video and the total length of the video. You can select and drag the blue and white scrub bar that is found above the bottom player buttons to navigate to different times of the video.
  5. Show Transcript (not available for all videos) - Select this button to reveal a searchable video transcript.
  6. Download (not available for all videos) - Select this button to view options for downloading the video to your device.
  7. Share (not available for all videos) - Select this button to view a menu with a shareable link to the video and embed code you can copy.
  8. Video Info - View the video's title, author, play count, and upload date. 
  9. Hide (multi-source videos only) - Select this button to hide the smaller secondary video stream to view only one video source at a time.
  10. Side-by-side Screens (multi-source videos only) - Select this button to switch to a player layout with sources presented side by side:

         Expand Buttons

    While in side by side mode, select the Expand button of any source to return to the picture-in-picture layout.
     
  11. Switch to Secondary Screen (multi-source videos only) - Select this button to swap the position of the larger and smaller video sources in the picture-in-picture video layout. While in the picture-in-picture layout, you can select and drag the smaller video to reposition it.
  12. Mute / Adjust Volume - Hover over the volume icon to reveal an adjustable volume level control or select the volume icon to mute or unmute audio.
  13. Closed Captioning - Select this button to enable or disable closed captioning.
  14. Settings - Select this button to open a menu with additional settings for controlling the captioning language, video quality, and playback speed. The "Auto" video quality setting will select the best quality that your internet connection and device can support.
  15. Picture in Picture - Select this button to pop the video player into a picture-in-picture window you can use to watch the video while scrolling elsewhere on the page or viewing other tabs in your browser.
  16. Fullscreen - Select this button to enter the full screen viewing mode. Press Esc on your keyboard or select the Exit full screen button to exit full screen mode.

Transcript Panel Controls

After opening the transcript panel with the Show Transcript button (number 5 above), you can use the following controls to interact with the transcript:

  1. Search in Transcript - Type in the search bar to search for and highlight keywords in the transcript.
  2. More transcript options - Select this button to open a menu with options for downloading the transcript as a text file or printing the transcript.
  3. Popout transcript - Select this button to open the transcript in a new window.
  4. Select a line in the transcript - Select any line of the transcript to jump to that time in the video.
  5. Hide transcript - Select this "X" button to close the transcript panel.

v2 Player Controls (legacy player)

  1. Play - Select this button to play or pause the video.
  2. Volume - Hover over the volume icon to reveal an adjustable volume level control or select the volume icon to mute or unmute audio.
  3. Toggle View (multi-source videos only) - Select this button to swap the position of the two video sources in a multi-source video layout.
  4. Layout (multi-source videos only) - Select this button to reveal multi-source video layout options (listed as the icons are shown from left to right):

    1. Single View layout - view one video source at a time.
    2. Side By Side layout - view video sources side by side.
    3. Picture In Picture layout - view video sources in a picture in picture layout (default for multi-source videos).
      While in the Picture In Picture layout, you can select and drag the smaller video to reposition it, and you can also select and drag the smaller video edges to change its size.
       
  5. Closed Captioning - Select this button to reveal and select languages for closed captioning.
  6. Playback Speed - Select this button to change the video playback speed.
  7. Quality Settings - Select the playback quality. The "Auto" setting will select the best quality that your internet connection and device can support.
  8. Full screen - Select this button to enter the full screen viewing mode. Press Esc on your keyboard or select the Exit full screen button to exit full screen mode.
