Account Setup Instructions for New Students

Step-by-Step Guide

Locate Your Username and Default Password

  • Your UW-Green Bay username/email address is provided in your admission letter.
    • Your UWGB username typically follows this format: [First 4 letters of your last name] + [First initial] + [Middle initial] + [2-digit day of your birth]
      • Example: If your name is John Adam Smith, born on February 1, 2000, your username would be: smitja01@uwgb.edu

Reset Your Default Password

For security reasons, University of Wisconsin - Green Bay students do not receive a default password in their admission letter. To create a password, follow these steps:
  1. Go to the Microsoft Password Reset Page

  1. Enter Your UWGB Email

    • Input your full UWGB email address (e.g., smitja01@uwgb.edu).

    • Complete the CAPTCHA and click Next.

  2. Select “I Forgot My Password”

    • On the next screen, choose the first option: "I forgot my password", then click Next.

  3. Verify Your Identity

    • Choose a verification method (typically, an alternate email or phone number).

      • If the verification method is incorrect or unavailable, call the GBIT Service Desk or visit in person. For security reasons, GBIT cannot assist with password resets via ticket.

  4. Receive a Verification Code

    • A code will be sent to your selected contact method.

    • Enter the code and click Next.

  5. Create a New Password
    Follow these Password Requirements:

    • Minimum length: 14 characters; maximum: 49 characters.
    • Must include uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters.
    • Must include at least one number.
    • Cannot repeat the same character more than twice consecutively.
    • Must not include personal information (e.g., name, birthday, SSN).
    • Cannot be any of your last 24 passwords.
    • Must be changed at least every 180 days.
  6. Finish the Process
    After creating your password, click Finish. Your password will immediately begin syncing across UWGB systems.

Set Up Okta Verify

After creating your new password, you will need to set up Okta Verify, UW-Green Bay’s multi-factor authentication (MFA) system.
  1. Head to a UWGB Single-Sign-On (SSO) Page

    • Navigate to www.uwgb.edu/email.
    • Log in using your UWGB username (with or without @uwgb.edu) and the new password you created.
  2. Set Up Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)

    • UWGB uses Okta Verify for MFA (multi-factor authentication).
    • Follow the instructions provided in this Okta Verify Setup Guide.

Access UWGB Systems and Services

  • Once you’ve set up Okta Verify, your account is ready to use.
  • UW-Green Bay uses Single Sign-On (SSO), so this password will grant you access to all UWGB systems and services.

Troubleshooting

  • If you encounter the error:
    • “We’re sorry. You can’t reset your own password because you haven’t registered for password reset.”
      • You will need to:
        • Call the GBIT Service Desk at (920) 465-2309 or
        • Visit in person at IS 1150.
        • IMPORTANT: GBIT cannot assist with password resets via ticket for security reasons.
